“Israel’s multicultural and multilingual diversity and the role of media in community interaction”

The Mussawa Advocacy Center and the NGO Dor Moria invite you to participate in a roundtable discussion. “Israel’s Multicultural and Multilingual Diversity and the Role of Media in Community Interaction.”

The roundtable will take place on December 29 at 7:00 pm at the Mussawa Center, 5 St. Lucas Street, Haifa. The event is dedicated to the diversity of Israeli society. The media will also be discussed to cover local community processes.

Different religious, linguistic and ethnic social groups make up the living diversity of Israeli society. Unfortunately, this diversity is often used by Israeli politicians to fuel inter-communal conflicts. Politicians pit people against each other for political and electoral dividends. This has the effect of short-circuiting communities within themselves. Both on the level of daily existence and in the information space.

Language and other social groups have their own information resources. However, they do not provide a reliable and complete picture of the communities in the neighborhood. If information appears, it is most often of a negative and scandalous nature.

The media can and must guarantee full public information to ensure the social security of Israeli society. That’s what we’re going to talk about at our meeting. The session will be attended by journalists and representatives of different language communities.

The panelists are well-known Israeli Arab and Russian-speaking journalists:

Diane Bhutto – Israeli English-language and International Media

Hani Zubida – Knesset Channel

Elena Shafran – Russian and Israeli Russian-language media

Inna Pavlova is a military journalist, Ukrainian and Israeli media outlets

Jackie Khoury – Haaretz newspaper and Alshams radio

The meeting will be followed by a tour of Haifa in celebration of the approaching New Year.
